Sabdamala – Nepalese Language School (NLS) Open Day
Sunday 7th March 2010
Marrickville West Public School

The Open Day for Sabdamala was held on Sunday, the 7th of March 2010. The event commenced at 4pm with informal talks over refreshments which followed into a welcome from Dr Narayan Pradhan, GNC President and presentation by members of the Working Committee1, Neelam Pradhananga, Rajan Chhetri and Bindya Subba. It was attended by 30 people, comprising of parents, community association representatives and volunteers.

The aim of the Open day was to obtain feedback on the conceptualisation of the program undertaken by the Working Committee for the NLS.

The Working Committee, based on feedback from various individuals who have experience in running such schools, have developed various documents for review including the Policy Statement, Terms and Conditions and Steering Committee Guidelines. These documents are expected to provide the Steering Committee and the community with guidelines and will assist in the institutionalisation of the Sabdamala program, which is central to its sustainability.

Positions are vacant for an Academic Co-ordinator and teachers. These documents can be viewed at Guthi Australia and GNC.

Overall there was positive feedback with lively discussions on how the School should proceed in term of community involvement and management to ensure the sustainability of the school. This is a key objective of the NLS.

Valuable practical support from representatives of Community organisations such as The Nepalese Forum for Human Rights and Peoples Democracy (NEHURIPD) and Nepal Kala Sanskriti tatha Sahitya Pratisthan (NKSSP) and individuals such as Mr Shyam Gurung came in the form of their commitment to promote the Sabdamala program and actively assist in the recruitment of parents and students in their respective suburbs through their organisational and personal contacts.

The program is still in its infancy, and there is still much work to be done. The Working Committee hopes that assurances of support from all organisations will be translated into concrete steps towards the implementation and running of the program.
The Working Committee will continue its work and will focus on the following areas in the immediate future:

- Development of brochure for circulation

- Appointment of Academic staff and development of curriculum and implementation plan

- Database of prospective parents / children along with development and implementation of a community wide survey with specific needs analysis

- Further development of Steering Committee guidelines to allow for the sustainability of the program

Photos of the program will be uploaded on the Guthi Australia website under 'Photo Gallery'.
The NLS would appreciate any assistance from the Media, Community Associations and the Nepalese Community on the above; please contact Bindya Subba at secretary@gnc.org.au or Neelam Pradhananga at admin@guthiaustralia.org.

Annual Dashain Cultural Program:

The Community has organized and presented an annual cultural program during the period of Dashain. This is a time to celebrate our Cultural heritage with song dance and traditional Nepalese Foods. The Cultural program would not be a success without the work of the Executive Committee but even more so the Cultural Artists and performers. The cultural artists include dancers and singers, some professional, but all who contribute a great deal of their time and efforts in producing a very professional show for the audience.

Nepalese Children Activity Group:

The objective of the Children Activity Group is to promote the Nepalese Language and Culture among the children of our members. The first class was held on Sunday 7th April at the 1st Scout Hall, Marrickville. Classes are held every Sunday from 3pm to 5pm. As has been the case in the past, Nepalese Children have done well to fit into the Australian way of life, however this has had a negative impact on their ability to speak and understand Nepali and the Nepalese Culture.

Our objective is not to teach the children the Nepalese Language to proficiency but to provide an environment where the Nepali language is spoken and appreciated. Some of the ways this has been done are:

  • Writing and saying the Nepali alphabet

  • Writing and saying the numbers in Nepali

  • Learning rhymes and singing Nepali children songs

  • Playing games with instructions in Nepali

The Activity Group wants to create an environment that the children can play and enjoy learning about Nepalese Language and Culture, this is not strictly a school. Parents are encouraged and welcomed to stay for the classes and be involved in the learning process outside the activity group.

Classes are conducted by a small group of motivated and dedicated staff. Members are more than welcome to contribute to the learning activities.
